Sensory Sensitivity measures how strongly an expression reflects heightened discomfort, irritation, or pain in response to ordinary sensory input such as light, noise, smells, or visual stimulation. It encompasses both generalized sensory reactivity and specific reports of overstimulation that interfere with comfort or functioning.
Minimal Sensory Sensitivity
Expressions activating this band contain little to no clear sensory reactivity, or mention isolated bodily symptoms and preferences without a stable pattern of being bothered by sensory input.
Mild Sensory Sensitivity
Expressions activating this band describe occasional or specific sensitivity to sensory experiences such as sound, light, temperature, or bodily sensation. The reactivity is present but limited in scope or intensity.
Moderate Sensory Sensitivity
Expressions activating this band describe noticeable sensory bothersomeness across everyday stimuli, including noise, smells, touch-like pain qualities, or eye discomfort. Sensory input is experienced as aversive enough to draw attention and provoke physical unease.
High Sensory Sensitivity
Expressions activating this band describe pronounced intolerance of bright light, noise, and related visual stimulation, often with irritation, eye discomfort, or a preference for dim environments. Sensory exposure is experienced as distinctly stressful or painful.
Severe Sensory Sensitivity
Expressions activating this band describe extreme sensory intolerance in which brightness, flashing, noise, or ordinary lighting is experienced as blinding, terribly distracting, or overwhelming. Sensory input is portrayed as acutely disruptive and difficult to endure even in routine settings.
